Directed by Luis Buñuel.
With Silvia Pinal, Fernando Rey, Francisco Rabal.

(1961) 90min

Following a 25-year exile, surrealist godfather Buñuel returned to Spain to direct this savagely sacrilegious, satirical masterpiece. On the cusp of taking her vows, virginal nun Silvia Pinal must first pay a visit to wealthy uncle (and Buñuel regular) Fernando Rey—who promptly sets about corrupting the young innocent. Buñuel’s Palme d’Or winner was decried by Franco, who ordered all prints of the film burned, and features one of the director’s most audacious set-pieces: a re-creation of Da Vinci’s Last Supper with beggars and thieves taking the place of the saints.
