In UHURU (the kiSwahili word for “freedom”), older toddlers will explore creative movement, music and rhythm through movement games, drumming, song and interactive stories. While still giving toddlers free movement time, this class will introduce children to longer dance and drum sequences. A drummer will provide live music. Parents and caregivers: come prepared to drum, dance and sing – your children learn best when you are involved!

About Jamie Philbert:

Jamie Philbert was born in Trinidad and raised in Brooklyn, and is the founder of Echoes Dance Company. Her work has been presented at Aaron Davis Hall/E-moves, Lincoln Center Out Of Doors, Mulberry St. Theater, Vassar College, B. Smith’s, Hollins University, Howard University, Riverside Theatre, Merce Cunningham Studio, Judson Memorial Church, S.O.B’s, Nuyorican’s Poets Cafe, Irving Plaza, BRIC, Rockwell’s, Brooklyn Museum of Art, MOMA, Corridor Gallery, and Five Myles Gallery. Jamie has worked with artists and companies such as the Alvin Ailey Arts in Education Program, CAS Ailey Camp, Charles Moore Dance Theater, Janis Brenner, H.T. Chen, Dian Dong, Nathan Trice/Rituals, Roger C. Jeffrey, Alfred Gallman’s Newark Dance Theater, and Nia Love/Blacksmith’s Daughter. In 2003, she received an emerging artist grant from Aaron Davis Hall to create new work. In 2005, she choreographed “Petit Rivye” for the Senior Dance Concert at La Guardia High School. Jamie has also amalgamated her love of dance, choreography, art, and a new passion for handcrafted jewelry design into a project called “Jewelry, Art and Movement,” which is a tribute to women of the diaspora. Most recently, she was given the opportunity to choreograph and perform to the prolific writing of Kamau Brathwaite in a theatrical setting; each performance is dedicated to the life of her mother, Veronica H. Philbert, who transitioned in 2001.

Jamie teaches Afro-Modern (Contemporary African) for teens/adults on Saturdays from 11:00am-12:30pm, Uhuru (Creative Movement for toddlers 18 months – 2 years) on Wednesdays from 9:45-10:30am, Ubuntu (Creative Movement for early walkers 12-18 months) on Fridays from 9:45-10:30am, and Sawubona (Creative Movement for ages 6-9) on Fridays from 4:00-5:30pm.
