WHITE SUGAR IN A BLACK POT will screen within the second shorts program beginning at 2:45 PM followed by a q&a.

Synopsis:
Denise Mackey is a hard working mother and a devoted wife who wants the best for her family. When a sudden opportunity arise for Denise and her husband to buy a house, the strength of her marriage is put to the test, and she is forced to make one of the toughest decisions of her life.

White Sugar in a Black Pot is a family drama that showcases a diligent mother who is forced to make a decision that will affect not only her future but also her family. The film expresses her struggle to come to terms with her reality and emphasizes the love and strength that holds her family together.

More about the director:
Rachel I. Johnson, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Johnson directed her thesis film “White Sugar In A Black Pot” with the assistance of the Warner Bros. Film Award and the George A. Heinemann Film Production Award. It was filmed on locations in Boerum Hill and Fort Greene Brooklyn. The film has screened at many film festivals within the United States and has won many prestigious awards including a CINE Golden Eagle Award, Best Student Film at the Hayti Heritage Film Festival in North Carolina, Best Student Drama at the International Film Festival in Hollywood California, and an African Movie Academy Award for Best Diaspora Short Film. Johnson is grateful for the exceptional love, support, and guidance she receives, and will continue to write and direct poignant films.
