On the Campaign Trail July: Public Safety

This week’s verdict in the George Zimmerman trial unfortunately, has made all of us think about Public Safety a little bit more. Keeping our children safe is a concern of all parents, and we in the 35th district need to come together as “One Brooklyn” to ensure that our children are safe.

In these uncertain economic times, the parents of working families are struggling to make ends meet. Often times, breadwinners are forced to work multiple jobs in order to provide for their family. Not every parent has the luxury of being able to pick up their children from school. It is important that we bridge the gap between the school day and work day by providing summer activities, job opportunities, and after-school and youth development programs for families.

The best way to keep our children safe is to keep them off the streets and in the classroom. My campaign has a Resource Guide on my website that explains how to take advantage of the available educational opportunities for our children. In the City Council, I will continue this effort and focus on maintaining and expanding current programs while securing new funding to develop more outlets for Brooklyn youth.

The saying, “Our Children are our Future,” is not just an empty phrase. The leaders of tomorrow are right here in our neighborhoods, and we need to come together to protect them. We need to watch out for each other. We need to make sure we know where our children are and who the people they spend time with are. We need to learn from the days of my youth when our neighbors truly knew us, when our friends were the children on our block and when local business were safe havens on our walk home from school. “Together in the 35th” we can ensure safe streets for our children, for our families and for our community.

This past week has made it clear that there will always be dangers that can make us feel unsafe in our neighborhoods but in order to prevent another senseless death of a child we must come together. We must collaborate and communicate with our neighbors, help families in need, and always watch out for each other’s safety. The only way to secure a better, safer future is to protect and invest in our children.
