FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — Facial hair of all shapes, sizes and ages graced the grounds of Fort Greene Park over the weekend for the borough's first Walt Whitman Beard and Mustache Competition.
The contest, one of many events held in honor of the poet's 200th birthday this year, celebrated Whitman's own legacy as an "eternal beard growing champion" with a series of categories based on his poems.
Beard growers were asked to register Saturday morning and then were judged on the "beauty and creativity" of their facial hair by judges Sue Smith, Jordan Temple, Murf Meyer, and Brooklyn Public Library's Norman Eriksen. Co-hosts Coney Island performance artist Adam Realman and "Too Woke!" comedian Nore Davis ran the show.
