The Week That Was in Ft. Greene and Clinton Hill

Fort Greene and Clinton Hill are filled with good stories, and Patch wants to hear all of them. This week was another busy one, with articles on everything from real estate, to bars, to schools. Here’s our roundup.

The week began with our real estate columnist’s look inside two Clinton Hill apartments. One was for sale — at a pretty reasonable price. The other was for rent — at a pretty unreasonable price. Both are in areas that quickly transforming — one by the Lafayette Gardens projects, the other an industrial area by the BQE.

On Wednesday we reported the latest chapter on the saga of Khalil Gibran Academy, the embattled Arabic and English middle school that was mired in controversy in 2007. A new report from the city reveals that the school is failing to attract new students, and proposes transforming it into a high school. It’s only the latest challenge for the academy, which opened its doors in 2007 only after its founding principal was ousted amid wild accusations that she was a terrorist sympathizer.

That same day our drinking columnist covered a wildly different subject: drinking at Der Schwarze Kolner. The Secret Sipper said that the German biergarten has a terrific European authenticity, and that it will surely be a destination once the weather warms up.

On Thursday we covered two of the latest developments on the Atlantic Yards-front. The Nets have begun selling the first tickets to games in Brooklyn, marking another milestone on the way to the 2012-2013 season. Meanwhile, developer Bruce Ratner sold a 49 percent stake in his Atlantic Terminal Mall — the latest sign that he is hard up for cash to fund the mega project.
