Our signature “Uhuru” classes at Cumbe: Center for African and Diaspora Dance inspire your toddlers to express themselves and explore their creative side with song, drumming, dance, and play.

WINTER/SPRING 2016 YOUTH PROGRAM Uhuru with Olatunji Ojore (Free and Creative Movement)

Uhuru (the Kiswahili word for “freedom”) is a series of creative movement classes featuring a combination of song, dance, and play – designed to ignite children’s creative voices and nurture their freedom of expression. Olatunji is proud to continue Jamie Philbert’s signature pedagogy and help build a foundation for a life-long creative practice.
This is a lively class for toddlers who are comfortable on their feet, featuring games, interactive stories, and dance, drum, and song sequences. Parent/guardian participation is required.

DATES: Semester runs January 11 – June 17 Make-up week: June 20-24

There will be no class on 3 Mondays: Jan 18, Feb. 15, & May 30.

PRICES:Monday Semester (21 classes): $294 Friday Semester (24 classes): $336 Drop-in price: $17

About Olatunji Ojore:
Olatunji is a Brooklyn-born percussionist, visual artist, and educator. With a focus on West African and Afro-Caribbean drumming, Olatunji uses rhythm as a learning tool, integrating traditional drumming and early childhood education. In his exciting and interactive lessons, Olatunji takes young learners on a musical journey around the world, introducing them to various instruments and rhythms along the way. As a children’s educator, one of his main goals is to create a safe space that inspires creativity, imagination, and children’s natural love of learning. Olatunji’s love for the art has brought him to stages, class rooms, and communities around the world. He can presently be heard drumming with Ghanaian drum orchestra Akoko Nate and Ropeadope recording artist Underground System.
