All Roosevelt Schools Designated as a School in Academic Good Standing
District's strategic plan pays off as middle school and high school are taken off State's "needs improvement" list
ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK (MARCH 2023) — With the recent notification from the New York State Department of Education that Roosevelt Middle School and Roosevelt High School have been taken off the State's needs-improvement list, the District is excited to announce that all five of its schools are now in academic good standing. "This year, we adopted a new theme at Roosevelt: 'I'm expecting great things.' With the State's announcement, we can proudly say that our expectations are coming to fruition," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deborah Wortham. "We had an opportunity to reset the District and worked tirelessly over the past two years on a strategic plan to make sure we provide every student with a path to success. This is a testament to the hard work put in by our educators and administrators at every level to cultivate a culture of improvement and achievement."
According to Mrs. Rose Gietschier, President of the Board of Education, "In 2020, at the start of Dr. Wortham's second tenure with the District, we convened a team of about 100 staff and community members to create a five-year strategic plan aimed at improving students' performance. The plan included four pillars to focus on in the classroom: critical thinking, problem-solving, technological literacy, and state/local assessment proficiency." In addition to setting forth these focus areas, teachers worked on explicit instruction driven by data to achieve academic success.
The District's plan paid off as state assessment performance increased over the past two years, and graduation rates jumped from 70% in 2018-2019 to 86% in 2021-2022.
