Charge Dropped Against Freeport Man; Police Beating On Video: DA
Akbar Rogers was facing trial for a violation, but was dismissed due to "witness unavailability," a spokesperson for the Nassau DA says.
MINEOLA, NY — The last remaining charge has been dropped against a Freeport man who was allegedly beaten by police in an incident that was captured on video during an arrest in 2019.
The District Attorney's office announced on Thursday they dropped a harassment violation connected to Akbar Rogers' initial arrest warrant, Newsday reported.
Rogers, 45, was scheduled to go to trial this week on the violation, which is lower than a felony or misdemeanor.

"This non-criminal violation charge was dismissed due to witness unavailability that precluded a speedy trial," Nicole Turso, a spokesperson for the DA's office, said.

Rogers and his legal team have filed a $25 million lawsuit against the officers involved in the arrest, Village of Freeport and Nassau County, Newsday reported.
