Dog Stabbed 17 Times In Freeport, But 'Need To Know What Happened': DA

Authorities are offering $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the animal abuse.

MINEOLA, NY —A dog was found stabbed 17 times and authorities in Nassau County want to find the person responsible for the act of violence toward the animal.

The Nassau County SPCA announced a $5,000 reward on Thursday morning for information that leads to an arrest and a conviction.

A Freeport woman brought a male dog to Bobbi and the Strays last month, but Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said they weren't equipped to properly treat the dog.

The woman took the dog to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, which took possession of the animal and "quickly brought the dog to an animal hospital in Farmingdale," Donnelly said.

Some of the wounds impacted the dog's lungs, which "caused them to leak air," she said. The dog was subsequently named "Cornell" by the town animal shelter. He was found bleeding from the stab wounds.

While the dog has been treated and is expected to survive, Donnelly said, "We need to know what happened to this dog. Cornell can't tell us his story. He can't tell us what happened."

Donnelly said the investigation is ongoing and they have no suspects.

"People start out on animals before they move into human beings," Gary Rogers, Nassau SPCA Board President said.

The DA's Animal Crimes Hotline is 516-571-7755 and Donnelly said, "My investigators will follow up and we will do everything we can to find who did this to Cornell."
