Drunken Nassau Crash Into Pole Sends 2 To Hospital: Police
The driver, Hakeem Matheus faces charges that include DWI, vehicular assault and reckless endangerment, police said.

FREEPORT, NY — A driver and his passenger were sent to the hospital after their vehicle left the road in Freeport and slammed into a pole during a drunken crash, police said.
Just after 4 a.m. Sunday, the driver, Hakeem Matheus, 28, of Freeport, was traveling east on Sunrise Highway near McKinley Avenue. When officers arrived, they spotted the vehicle's rear half in the roadway and the front portion against a building at 249 W. Sunrise Highway, authorities said.
Matheus and his 27-year-old male passenger were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Matheus is charged with driving while intoxicated, second-degree vehicular assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving and second-degree assault. He was also charged for operating an unregistered vehicle.
He will be arraigned when medically practical, police said.
