Uniondale Union Free School District’s Lawrence Road Middle School recently held a Thanksgiving celebration for their English as a New Language (ENL) scholars. This was the largest Thanksgiving event held at Lawrence Road, with over 160 scholars in attendance.
The ENL teachers put on their aprons and prepared phenomenal dishes for the program-wide affair. Rather than sticking to a Thanksgiving meal’s traditional components, the teachers also opted to serve an assortment of cultural dishes.
“Cultural exchange is how we grow and learn from one another,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. “By combining the holiday with our scholars’ cultures, we show respect and dedication to each individual’s identity. Thanksgiving is a time of giving thanks and showing appreciation for our families and communities. I am incredibly thankful for the commitment our ENL educators have to helping ease our scholars not just into learning the English language, but for those that recently arrived in America, learning about the new society they have stepped into.”

The ENL program is dedicated to providing scholars with programming specifically developed to meet their needs, while helping satisfying the rigorous academic benchmarks necessary for graduation. The ENL scholars are immersed in the English language through engaging field trips and classroom activities, all aimed at providing the best possible educational experience.
