Roosevelt Brings Fairytales to Life at Homecoming
District shows community spirit for "Once Upon a Time" homecoming weekend
ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK (OCTOBER 2022) — The warm Autumn sun shone over a sea of blue and gold as the Roosevelt School District celebrated homecoming with students, staff members, alumni and community members on October 29.
Throughout the week, all five schools in the district—including Centennial Avenue, Washington Rose and Ulysses Byas Elementary School, Roosevelt Middle School and Roosevelt High School—held their own “Spirit Week” for students and faculty to show their school spirit. Each school also held a separate coronation ceremony, in which students were named to their school’s homecoming court.
Roosevelt High School students also celebrated homecoming with their neighbors at the Children’s Learning Center at the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County. On October 25, members of the marching band, the majorette dance team and the Varsity cheerleading team performed for students at the Children’s Learning Center, while members of the Varsity football team showcased their athletic skills and taught them how to throw a football.

The festivities led to pep rallies throughout the district on Friday before Saturday’s game at Roosevelt High School, where the Rough Riders faced off against the Lynbrook Owls.
“Homecoming had such a tremendous turnout from families and staff members excited to march in the parade and staff and students showing support for their peers during the football game. There was so much joy throughout the day and it was great to see everyone’s smiling faces showing Roosevelt pride together,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deborah Wortham.

The theme of this year’s homecoming was “Once Upon a Time” and Dr. Wortham and the Board of Education marched as fairy princesses with an inflatable unicorn at the helm of their float. School principals, students, faculty, and PTA members marched in the parade with their own handcrafted banners and floats decorated to different fairytales and cartoons.
The football team started out this season with two impressive wins against Valley Stream North and Hewlett High School. After losing to Plainedge High School, last year’s Long Island champions, the Rough Riders rebounded with a victory against Glen Cove High School. Although the Rough Riders fought a hard game at homecoming, they lost to the Lynbrook Owls with a final score of 15 to 6.
