Roosevelt Elementary Schools Receive Grant to Improve Student Health
Roosevelt School District Combats Obesity with New Educational Fruit and Vegetable Program
The Roosevelt Union Free School District recently received the a more than $100,000 grant from the New York State Education Department to bring healthy snacks to elementary schools for the 2017-2018 school year. The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Competitive Grant will provide students at Centennial Avenue Elementary School, Ulysses Byas Elementary School and Washington Rose Elementary School with a daily variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, free of charge.
"Teaching students about proper nutrition is part of our mission to provide a robust education that will benefit students for their entire lives," said Superintendent Dr. Marnie Hazelton. "The Roosevelt School District is committed to combatting childhood obesity and helping students make healthier choices for their minds and bodies."
To meet the terms of the grant, the Roosevelt School District has partnered with Whitson’s Culinary Group, which will be responsible for the day-to-day management of healthy fruit and vegetables available to elementary students. Whitson’s Culinary Group will work closely with the elementary schools’ principals and administrative staff to facilitate this effort.

“Our ultimate goal is to educate our students on the benefits of healthy eating and improve their present and future health,” added Superintendent Dr. Marnie Hazelton. “The education our students receive helps them thrive mentally and physically both inside and outside the classroom.”
