Roosevelt Students Learn About History Through Art

Centennial Avenue students visit Hofstra University's Museum of Art and engage in its Art Travelers program

ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK (OCTOBER 2022) — Third-grade students at Centennial Avenue Elementary School, in the Roosevelt School District, recently explored ancient cultures across the world by visiting the Hofstra University Museum of Art and participated in its program “Art Travelers Through Time: Literacy and History.”

Since 2008, the nationally recognized program has provided elementary school students and teachers with the opportunity to connect a classroom course of study called “Communities Around the World” to the study of authentic cultural objects from the museum’s vast and diverse collections.

Students examined and studied the history of different artifacts on display and created their own art projects based of what they saw in the museum. Some of their projects will be featured in the Art Travelers Fall/Winter newsletter.

“Our third-grade students had an illuminating field trip that taught them about different cultures around the world, while giving them an opportunity to explore their own creativity and artistic skills,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deborah Wortham.

Students created their own patterns and designs with colorful paints they used on stamps inscribed with historical images. Each student finished the project with a series of bold prints based on artwork in the museum.

“Learning about these artifacts and discussing them as a class engaged students in the discovery and creative thinking processes,” said Centennial Avenue Elementary School Principal Barbara Solomon. “The experience supports the development of essential 21st Century skills and reinforces classroom learning.”

The “Art Travelers” program is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul, the New York State Legislature, the Long Island Community Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
