South Shore Blueway Grand Opening Celebration

Dedication & Ribbon Cutting: There will be a formal dedication ceremony by Nassau County Executive Mangano and other local leaders. Following the dedication there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and the unveiling of Blueway Trail Signage. In addition, a waterproof South Shore Blueway Trail Map, sponsored by SUEZ, will be available at the ceremony. This is a fee-free day at Bay Park, which will have just completed installation of ADA compliant launches for nonmotorized boating.

Recreational Paddlers: Paddlers are invited to bring their own kayaks, canoes and S.U.Ps to join the inaugural paddle from Bay Park to Hewlett Point Park, and back. There will also be an Eco Tour of the salt marshes led by marine biologist Kevin Rodgers. In addition, the public is invited to enjoy family kayaking, kayak fishing, SUP demos, and kayak safety clinics. Exhibitors will feature some of the south shore’s unique attractions.

About the Blueway: The South Shore Blueway is made up of 22 launches and landings providing safe, easily reached water access for human-powered boaters to explore the western bays of the South Shore Estuary Reserve and experience its beauty visiting its numerous parks, historic sites, natural areas, and attractions. Now visitors can discover the unique characteristics and abundant wildlife. Sweep through salt marsh islands on quiet creeks and channels where migratory shorebirds nest, harbor seals haul out and tiny Bayhouses of shellfishers stand on stilts above the wetlands. By using the appropriate gear, following safety precautions and being aware of tides and weather conditions, even beginners and families can experience the beautiful scenery and nature of the South Shore Blueway. The trail highlights community connections, encouraging residents and visitors to enjoy recreational, educational and scenic experiences that promote healthy lifestyles and are environmentally sustainable.

The project was approved as part of the 2006 Nassau County Environmental Bond Act Program. In 2008, the Village of Freeport joined with Nassau County and obtained matching funds from a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) Grant from the New York State Department of State under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund. Since 2012, local communities have collaborated in an inclusive planning process involving input from more than 1,000 residents to develop the water trail stretching the entire south shore of Nassau County.
