12-Year-Old Girl Walking to School Struck, Killed by SUV in Elmont

Police have released details on a crash that claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl Monday morning.

ELMONT, NY- A 12-year-old girl has died after she was hit by an SUV near Elmont Memorial Junior-Senior High School Monday morning, police said.

The seventh-grader was walking east on Elmont Road when she was struck by a 2013 Nissan Rogue around 7:35 a.m. at the intersection Village Avenue, police said. The Rogue had been traveling southbound on Elmont Road.

The girl, who Newsday identified as Gabrielle Christina Johnson, suffered internal injuries and was transported to Franklin General Hospital, where she died from her injuries at 8:52 a.m., police said.

The Rogue driver, a 38-year-old man from Far Rockaway, remained at the scene of the crash and no criminal charges are expected to be filed.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

The girl was with a group of friends when she ran across the street against the traffic light, ABC 7 reported.
