2 From North Carolina Charged In Hempstead Murder: Police

Police say the two -- a man and a teen -- gunned down another man in the street earlier this month.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — Nassau County police arrested two people from North Carolina, including a teenager, for the murder of a 40-year-old Hempstead man earlier this month.

According to police, Hempstead police officers responded to a Shot Spotter notification at 8:35 p.m. on Jan. 12, near the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Dakota Place. When they arrived, they found Ricardo Cardona, 40, of Hempstead, lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head.

An ambulance responded to the scene, and a paramedic pronounced Cardona dead.

On Jan. 27, police arrested Diego Avila-Huicab, 31, of Robbins, North Carolina, and a 16-year-old male, of Sanford, North Carolina, for the murder.

They are both charged with second-degree murder, and are scheduled to be arraigned later today.
