#59: Fall Tour of Nassau Haven

"Little Connecticut" is perfect for a walking tour.

I’m prejudiced. I think the area that I live in, Nassau Haven, is one of the nicest in Garden City.

It’s home to Nassau Haven Park, Norris Park and the Garden City Bird Sanctuary/Tanners Pond Environmental Center. Nassau Haven is referred to as “Little Connecticut” by some residents since it has curved streets, no sidewalks and lots of green space. It’s located in the western section, between Tanners Pond Road on the east side and Clinch Avenue on the west, and from Fenimore Avenue on the south to the Long Island Rail Road on the north. Within those streets are lovely homes with beautiful gold- and orange-tinged trees this week.

I started my “leaf walk” at Tanners Pond Road and headed west along Fenimore Avenue, making a right turn north along Hathaway Drive. Hathaway has the only two cul de sacs in town that I am aware of. One is called Lincoln Court (closer to Fenimore) and the other is Kenilworth Court (closer to Greenridge). These court names are not familiar to most residents. Despite having houses in each court, they all have addresses of Hathaway Drive.

I continued my walk along the two blocks of Hathaway and made a right turn onto Greenridge Avenue, heading east for a block, stirring up the fallen leaves in the field. The road curves to the right and is then called Hawthorne Road. After a short detour along Colvin Drive heading west, I turned around and retraced my steps back to Hawthorne Road. For some reason Colvin changes name to Colonial Avenue after only one block. I walked into Nassau Haven Park and said hello to Garden City Recreation attendant, John. I then walked along Hudson Road, where I ended my tour.

Come back next Tuesday at 10 a.m. for reason #58. Click here if you missed reason #60.
