Adelphi Building Evacuated For Freon Leak: Garden City Police

The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Feb. 26.

  • Surveillance video showed a man stealing packages from the porch of a 1st Street home on Feb. 18.
  • Officers responded to Nassau County Probation on County Seat Drive on Feb. 19 and arrested a 31-year-old man from Mineola for an outstanding Garden City Village Court traffic warrant.
  • A 24-year-old man was charged with driving on Clinton Road with a suspended license, tinted windows and improper license plate on Feb. 19.
  • Firefighters responded to the Adelphi University science building for a Freon leak on Feb. 19. The building was evacuated; occupants returned to the building after it was vented and the condition was corrected.
  • Officers responded to a Garden City home on Feb. 20 and arrested a 31-year-old woman for disobeying a Nassau County Court “Stay Away” order. The woman was charged with criminal contempt.
  • A joint investigation on Supreme Court Drive by Garden City officers and Nassau County Probation on Feb. 20 resulted in the arrest of a 33-year-old man from Plainview for driving without a court ordered interlock device and driving with a suspended license.
  • Upon investigation of a suspicious person going through cars in Parking Field 12 on Feb. 21, officers located and arrested a 25-year-old man from Franklin Square for criminal possession of a stolen credit card, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a controlled substance (Alprazolam).
  • Garden City detectives arrested a 22-year-old woman from the Bronx on Feb. 21 for cashing an altered check that was stolen from a mailbox in January for $8,500. She was charged with grand larceny.
  • A vehicle was reported stolen from the driveway of a Bluebell Court residence on Feb. 22.
  • A vehicle parked on Spruce Street and a vehicle parked on Bayberry Avenue were rummaged through on Feb. 22; no loss was reported from either vehicle.
  • Officers responded to Edgemere Road on Feb. 22 for a report of debris hanging from the train overpass. MTA workers responded to the scene and corrected the condition.
  • As a result of a traffic investigation on Locust Street on Feb. 23, officers arrested a 29-year-old man from Hempstead for an outstanding Nassau County warrant for possession of marijuana, unregistered vehicle, uninsured vehicle and missing front plate.
  • Firefighters extinguished a rubbish fire between two homes on Clinton Road on Feb. 23.
  • Firefighters extinguished a garbage bin fire outside a Franklin Avenue restaurant on Feb. 23.
  • Officers arrested a 20-year-old man on Feb. 24 for driving on Franklin Avenue at 7th Street with 12 license suspensions, excessive speed and an outstanding Nassau County traffic warrant.
  • A 22-year-old woman was charged with driving on Clinton Road with a suspended license and excessive speed on Feb. 24.
  • A construction vehicle with multiple equipment violations was stopped on Merillon Avenue on Feb. 24. Upon investigation, the truck’s owner, a New Hyde Park construction company, was cited for having unsecured propane cylinders, unsecured fuel containers, mislabeled flammable materials and miscellaneous equipment violations. In addition, the 42-year-old driver was charged with unlicensed operation.
  • On Feb. 25, a Garden City Plaza business reported numerous fraudulent checks in the company’s name were cashed for a total loss of $35,000.
  • A 45-year-old man was charged with driving on Nassau Boulevard with six license suspensions and excessive speed on Feb. 25.
  • A resident reports an unknown person fraudulently redeemed the reward points from his credit card account on Feb. 25.
  • A 31-year-old man was charged with driving on Franklin Avenue with a suspended registration and excessive speed on Feb. 25.
  • Over the course of the week, multiple checks, reported stolen from area mailboxes, were bleached, altered and cashed for higher amounts. To assist in preventing mail theft, residents are encouraged to give their mail directly to their mail carrier or place them in mail receptacles inside a post office in lieu of placing them in street mailboxes.
