Anthrax Scare Closes Business: The Garden City Crime Report

Officers responded to a report of a malfunctioning railroad gate at the Nassau Boulevard crossing on March 21.

A resident reports his credit card information was used without authorization to make a $500 purchase at a local department store on March 22.

On March 23, an employee of a Kellum Place business opened an envelope received by mail and observed a white powdery substance inside. Officers responded and safeguarded the area. Nassau County Emergency Services Units arrived at the scene, investigated the substance and determined it to be non-hazardous. Several employees were placed under observation by Nassau County medics until the scene was cleared. A similar incident occurred at this location in February. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers removed a tree limb that had fallen onto Russell Road on March 23.

A package delivered by Fed-Ex was reported stolen from the front stoop of a Stewart Avenue residence on March 23.

Officers arrested a 54-year-old man from Queens on Washington Avenue at Poplar Street on March 24 for driving with 12 license suspensions, defective taillights, uninsured operation and a Suffolk County larceny warrant.

While on patrol on March 25, a police sergeant saw a car stopped on Stewart Avenue in front of the Garden City Police Station with its reverse lights on. As the officer approached the vehicle, they saw the driver was asleep with his foot on the brake and the vehicle in reverse. Upon investigation, the driver, a 39-year-old man from Garden City, was placed under arrest for DWI and impeding traffic.

During a domestic incident investigation on March 25, officers arrested a 27-year-old man from Garden City for head-butting another family member while threatening to cause serious physical injury. He was charged with aggravated harassment.

Officers investigated a report of a green minivan leaving the scene after sideswiping another vehicle on Stewart Avenue and Hampton Road on March 25.

On March 26, a police officer saw a vehicle stopped in the left lane on Stewart Avenue in the vicinity of Westbury Road. The officer observed that the operator was asleep and the vehicle was running. Upon further investigation, the driver, a 33-year-old man from Uniondale, was arrested for driving while impaired by drugs and impeding traffic.

Officers assisted the Garden City Fire Department who responded to a small brush fire in Parking Field 12 on March 26.

On March 26, sunglasses were reported stolen from a vehicle parked at a Locust Street residence, personal papers were reported stolen from a vehicle parked at a Wellington Road residence and money was reported stolen from a vehicle parked at a Fourth Street residence.

A wallet, gym bag and jacket were reported stolen from a locker at the New York Sports Club on March 26.

Officers responded to a report of a dispute on a NICE bus on County Seat Drive on March 26. Upon investigation, a 26-year-old man from Inwood was arguing with his ex-girlfriend in violation of a stay away court order. The man was charged with criminal contempt and an outstanding Village of Lawrence traffic warrant.

As a result of a domestic incident investigation on March 27, officers arrested a 24-year-old man from Elmont on Bayberry Avenue for breaking his wife’s cell phone and eyeglasses. He was charged with two counts of criminal mischief.
