Bites Nearby: Bagelman

Salads, soups, wraps and, naturally, bagels at this village staple.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Garden City Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here’s this week’s choice:

Bagelman: You know about the bagels, which at 75 cents apiece is one of the best bargains in town. However, Bagelman on Seventh Street is much more than bagels and breakfast as its regulars know all-too-well.

Open until 5 p.m. weekdays, Bagelman owner Ken Mataix has embraced the lunchtime market. Sixteen lunch specialties are featured, including $5.99 favorites like Bagelman’s Reuben, Lean Delight (honey maple turkey, alpine lace swiss, lettuce, tomato and Italian dressing); and the Birdie (chicken salad, bacon, melted Swiss on a roll).

Bagelman wraps include newcomers: the Grilled Chicken Cranberry (with walnuts, field greens and raspberry vinaigrette) for $8.49; the Santa Fe (grilled chicken, spicy BBQ sauce, spinach and melted mozzarella) for $7.75; the Texas (sliced steak, peppers and onions) $6.75; and the New York (steak with fried onions and mozzarella) for $6.99.

Bagelman’s “overstuffed” deli sandwiches include Mesquite, Honey Maple or Peppermill Turkey for $5.25.

Salads, ‘lite’ platters and soups are also featured. The new Goat Cheese Salad for $5.99 includes goat cheese, candied walnuts, dried cranberries, with mescaline greens and raspberry vinaigrette dressing).

Breakfast runs the gamut from bagels, egg sandwiches and French toast, as well as the Mexicali Wrap (three eggs, sausage, jack and cheddar cheeses and Pico de Gallo) for $3.99; and the Hungry Man Hero (three eggs, bacon, sausage, ham and cheese) for $5.75.

Bagelman provides free delivery for orders of $10 and more and does a significant catering business for home and office customers.

Bagelman: 162 Seventh Street, 516-746-2881. Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
