Bites Nearby: Pizza Supreme

Minimalist approach works for E. Garden City establishment known for the "square pie."

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Garden City Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here’s this week’s choice:

Pizza Supreme: There are so many places for village residents to enjoy a slice of pizza that it is easy to overlook those restaurants that have existed for decades and set a mark for excellence. Pizza Supreme is one good example.

You may recall Pizza Supreme when it rented space at the Roosevelt Field Shopping Center. But for more than two decades, the establishment has called 678 Stewart Avenue home. Over the years, it has nourished patrons with its signature heros, pasta dishes and salads, but mostly pizza.

Pizza Supreme is known for its square pie, which is akin to a smaller Sicilian slice (prices for the pies range from $13.50 for cheese to $15.30 with peppers). The key here may be in its minimalist approach, since the slice is small and thin, which allows for the crust to stay crispier. Pizza Supreme’s regular slice (pies range from $12.50 to $19.50) is good as well, and their really garlicky knots are a house favorite.

What’s different about Pizza Supreme compared to similar restaurants is that they don’t try to overwhelm you with 30 different pizza combinations or dozens of wraps, paninis and other dishes. They know what they do well and they stick to their knitting.
