This Week Crime In Garden City: Man Struck By Train, Brush Fire, Vaping

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Incorporated Village of Garden City released its crime report for the week ending Tuesday, May 19

The items reported took place between May 13 and May 19 and are as follows:

May 19:
- GCPD and GCFD responded to a Garden City residence in response to a report of a house fire. Upon arrival, a small pile of leaves by a heater duct was on fire outside the residence. GCFD put out the fire.
May 18:

- GCPD and GCFD responded to a report of a brush fire. GCFD extinguished the brush fire before GCPD's arrival and deemed the area safe.
- A resident reported that a $10,700 check had been stolen, altered, and cashed. Detectives are investigating.
- GCPD received two separate calls about found dogs on Commercial Ave. Both dogs were reunited with their owners.
- Officers responded to a residence for a report of youths in the driveway with water guns. The homeowner believes the incident was part of a GCHS senior prank and wants it documented for informational purposes. Area canvassed with negative results.
- Officers stopped a vehicle traveling southbound on Cherry Valley Ave. at 9 th St. for a suspended registration. The investigation at the scene revealed that the driver also had a suspended license. The vehicle was impounded, and five tickets were issued, including aggravated unlicensed operation and operation of a vehicle with a suspended registration.
May 17:
- GCPD officers responded to Franklin Ave. at 12 th St. for a traffic signal outage. Officers remained on scene until the condition was corrected.
- GCPD and GCFD responded to Hampton Rd. south of Stratford Ave. for a report of a smoking vehicle. GCFD determined that the vehicle may have had an electrical issue and that there was no fire.
May 16:
- GCPD and GCFD responded to Santander Bank, 998 Franklin Ave, for a fire call. The alarm was set off due to steam/vaping in the restroom.
- GCPD and GCFD responded to Community Bank on Franklin Ave for an alarm that was set off due to vaping.
May 15:
- GCPD responded to a dispute on Yale St. regarding an estate sale, and it was settled at the scene.
- A Garden City resident reported a package stolen from the front stoop, with a total loss of $1,300.
May 14:
- A Garden City resident reported an identity theft. An unknown person opened five credit cards in the resident's name and incurred $5,770.03 in unauthorized charges. Detectives are investigating.
May 13:
- GCPD responded to Nassau Blvd. RR station for an unknown man who was struck by a train. The man was transported to Winthrop and later succumbed to his injuries. The MTA is investigating.
- Officers responded to a report of identity theft. The resident reported $9,306.45 in unauthorized charges to her Macy's card. Detectives are investigating.
- GCPD responded to assist NC Probation with the arrest of a 70-year-old male Elmont man after an aggravated unlicensed operation and circumventing a court-ordered interlock device.
- Officers responded to Nassau Blvd. RR station for malfunctioning gates. MTA was at the scene and reset the gates.
