Names provided by the community were chosen – find out if your name was selected.

GARDEN CITY, NY — Garden City Public Library has a few chicks up their sleeve this week – and names chosen for their fluffy friends. Meet Meggie, Lyla, and Darth Vader.

Out of 905 names submitted, the library pulled three names to give to their chicks.

  • Meggie, submitted by Madison Chan, Grade 7.
  • Lyla, submitted by Lily I., age 4.
  • Darth Vader, submitted by Benedict Popeil, age 4.

The library received eggs on Feb. 25, with one hatching on Wednesday as part of their annual Chick Incubation program.

Unfortunately, only one of the eggs hatched, and the library shared on Facebook that chicks are social beings and "cannot be alone without becoming severely depressed."

Luckily, Cornell Cooperative Extension came to the rescue and let the library pick up two chick friends for the solo chick to avoid having to send him back early. The two new chicks made their way to the library from Suffolk County Farm, with videos on Facebook and a livestream on YouTube of all three chicks interacting.
