Elderly Resident Targeted By Scam: Garden City Police

The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Oct. 9.

  • As a result of power outage issues on Oct. 2, officers conducted traffic details at Hilton Avenue and 9th for a traffic light malfunction and at the Hilton Avenue Railroad Crossing for gate malfunctions.
  • Officers conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on Clinton Road on Oct. 2. Numerous vehicles were inspected, of which six were taken out of service. Police issued 82 tickets for various traffic and safety violations, including overweight and unsecured load violations.
  • Upon investigation of an auto accident on Franklin Avenue on Oct. 3, officers arrested one of the drivers, a 33-year-old man from South Carolina, for DWI.
  • Upon investigation of a male slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle on Franklin Avenue on Oct. 3, officers arrested a 23-year-old man from Roosevelt for DWI.
  • Officers investigated reports of multiple thefts from gym lockers inside a Franklin Avenue gym on Oct. 4.
  • A vehicle parked in a Meadow Street driveway was entered on Oct. 4, but no loss was reported.
  • Upon investigation of a vehicle crashing into a pole on Cathedral Avenue on Oct. 5, officers arrested a 38-year-old man from Williston Park for DWI and driving with a suspended license.
  • Officers and firefighters responded to a Meadow Street home on Oct. 6 for a report of a house fire. Upon investigation, an appearance ticket was issued to the resident for burning brush in the rear yard, resulting in a significant smoke condition in the area.
  • Officers responded to St. James Street South on Oct. 6 for a report of a fallen tree in the roadway. The area was safeguarded until the Parks Department removed it.
  • Money was reported stolen from an employee's desk inside an office on the Adelphi University campus on Oct. 7.
  • A vehicle parked in an Adelphi University parking field was apparently struck and damaged by another vehicle that left the scene without stopping on Oct. 7.
  • An elderly resident was a victim of the grandparent scam on Oct. 8. The victim received a call from a person claiming to be her grandson who stated he was arrested and needed $8,000 for bail. She agreed and a short time later, a person came to her home to pick up the money. The victim realized she was a victim of a scam when she received a second call asking for more money. It was determined the grandson was not arrested.
  • Officers investigated a report of a vehicle leaving the scene after it struck and damaged a NICE Bus on New Hyde Park Road on Oct. 8. No injuries were reported.
