Elderly Residents Targeted By Scam; Tons Of Shopping Carts Stolen

On Oct. 10, officers investigated a scam where an elderly female victim received a phone call from a person claiming to be her grandson who said he was arrested in Florida. Another man got on the phone and said he was the grandson’s lawyer and told the woman to acquire $3,000 in gift cards for her grandson’s bail, call him back and inform him of the numbers on the back of the cards. After the woman complied with the caller’s request, she received another call from the person claiming to be her grandson telling her to call in an additional $6,000 in gift cards to settle a law suit. The victim complied with this request and later learned that her grandson was never arrested and the calls were a scam. On Oct. 11, an elderly male stated he was the victim of a similar scam with a loss of $2,000.
A resident reported her credit card information was used without permission or authorization to make four online purchases totaling more than $1,700 on Oct. 10.
An employee of a Seventh Street restaurant said he was walking his dog on Seventh Street on Oct. 10 when he and his dog were attacked by a loose pit-bull. The man was treated at a local hospital for a hand injury and his dog was treated at a local veterinary hospital for a leg injury. Upon investigation, officers determined the dog’s owner to be a 47-year-old man from Oceanside. He was issued appearance tickets for Village Code violations for dog at large and unlicensed dog.

Sears loss prevention officers report a man stole more than $1,000 worth of tools on Oct. 11. He was confronted outside in the parking lot where he dropped the tools and fled the scene.
An electronic device was reported stolen from a vehicle in a Stewart Avenue driveway on Oct. 11.

A package delivered by a courier service was reported stolen from the property of a Fourth Street residence on Oct. 11.
Upon the investigation of an Oct. 1 report of criminal mischief and graffiti to various walls and windows at St. Paul’s School, Garden City detectives arrested a 21-year-old man from East Islip and a 20-year-old man from Islip Terrace on Oct. 12 for the incidents. They were both charged with third-degree burglary.
A handbag and a tote bag were reported stolen from a vehicle parked on 1st Place on Oct. 12.
Officers conducted a traffic stop investigation on Commercial Avenue on Oct. 13 resulting in the arrest of a 35-year-old woman from Garden City for DWI and driving without her car's headlights activated.
A package delivered by a courier service was reported stolen from the property of a Barnes Lane residence on Oct. 13.
Officers investigated a report of graffiti and equipment tampering at a Ring Road work site on Oct. 13.
A joint investigation by Garden City detectives and Freeport Police Department detectives resulted in the arrest of a 52-year-old man from Freeport for criminal sale of a narcotic (crack-cocaine) and criminal possession of a narcotic.
Officers and detectives investigated a burglary report at a Roxbury Road residence on Oct. 15. The incident appeared to have occurred between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. An upstairs window and screen were found damaged and various coins and jewelry were reported stolen from the second floor.
As a result of a power outage on Oct. 15, officers responded to Cathedral Avenue for traffic light outages at Second and Third Streets.
Officers responded to Lord & Taylor on Oct. 16 and arrested a 63-year-old woman from Queens for the theft of assorted merchandise valued at $137.
Keyfood reported the larceny of 30 shopping carts valued at $3,700 from Parking Field 7N on Oct. 16.
