“Blues for an Alabama Sky”

The Nassau Community College Africana Studies and Theatre and Dance Departments are proud to present “Blues for an Alabama Sky,” which will be performed at the Little Theatre January 26 through 29 and February 1 through February 5, 2012.

In “Blues for an Alabama Sky,” written by Pearl Cleage, it’s the summer of 1930 and the creative euphoria of the Harlem Renaissance has given way to the harsher realities of the Great Depression. “Nobody’s working and nobody’s got prospects,” declares Angel, a jazz singer recently fired from the Cotton Club. Not so, says Guy, a gay designer who looks after Angel and is armed with a portfolio of flamboyant sketches for Josephine Baker, star of the Folies Bergeres. A Harlem Hospital doctor, a social worker and a recent transplant from Alabama are also caught up in the conflicting currents and politics of the time. Cleage’s characters struggle to look beyond 125th Street for the fulfillment of their dreams.

Performances of “Blues for an Alabama Sky” are at 8:00 p.m., except for Sundays, when they are at 3:00 p.m. Tickets, which cost $9.00 per person, are $7.00 for seniors age 55 and over and those under 18. Tickets sold at the door for that day’s performance are free for college students who have a current valid ID. These tickets are available beginning one hour before curtain. For more information about the play or to order tickets, call the Theatre Box Office at 516.572.7676 Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
