FCA is acknowledged by Mineola Historical Society

Original FCA Site Receives Historical Plaque

On Saturday, October 23rd the Mineola Historical Society held a formal historical plaque dedication highlighting the original site of The Children's Home with a historical marker. The Children's Home was the orphanage originally founded in 1884 which became Family and Children's Association (FCA) a century later. FCA is currently located in its new headquarters at 377 Oak Street in Garden City

Garden City resident and FCA Development Coordinator, Frances Mingoia represented FCA at last week's dedication which took place at the original site of the orphanage at Copley Court in Mineola. FCA was thanked for providing the Historical Society access to the ample archives of The Children's Home that date back to the 1880s. The nonprofit was also acknowledged for providing numerous human and social services and aiding the struggling children, families, seniors and communities on Long Island for the past 137 years. Lastly, the Deputy Mayor of the Village Mineola, Paul Pereira, noted how the donation of land in 1950 from the board of the Children's Home to the Village of Mineola has impacted multiple generations of children in the community.

Tom Murta, the President of the Mineola Historical Society, opened the ceremony by thanking everyone gathered that morning as they unveiled the historical marker offering a window into the past. He thanked those in attendance who have helped keep history alive in Mineola. Vice President, Peter Burnside, added how big of a step the services of the orphanage had been in making strides in the improvement of the welfare of orphaned and impoverished children on Long Island.

Deputy Mayor Paul Pereira praised the Historical Society and FCA's efforts in promoting local history. Frances Mingoia has been a guest speaker at the Mineola Memorial Library and the Mineola Historical Society and has conducted presentations to celebrate and educate the public and FCA staff on the rich history of the philanthropic efforts of the Long Island families who founded The Children's Home as well as the Long Island residents who have provided unwavering support over its long history.
