Garden City Considers New Apartment Complex
The public will be able to voice its opinion on buildings 150 units on a vacant lot on Stewart Avenue.

The Village of Garden City is moving to the next phase in the process to turn a vacant lot on Stewart Avenue into an apartment building.
The property, located at 555 Stewart Ave., has been a vacant lot for years. A company, 550 Stewart Acquisitions LLC, is requesting a zoning change on the parcel so it can build two five-story apartment buildings on the property.
The village's Zoning Change Review Committee has been reviewing the proposal since late last year, and recently concluded the request is reasonable.

"The committee’s report concludes that the proposal is a reasonable one under all circumstances and recommends the village amends the RT zone regulation to allow such development," said Deputy Mayor John DeMarco, who is a member of the committee. "Provided that the Board of Trustees grants a special permit for the development and that the site plan for the development be approved by the village."
The plan calls for constructing the two buildings on the 4.5-acre parcel, which would create 150 apartments. Of those, 15 would be set aside as affordable housing.

In order to forward, the village has to hold public hearings on the proposal. A public hearing has been secheduled for 8 p.m. on March 22 to hear comments on changing the zoning and granting a variance to build a multi-family residence on the property. The hearings will likely take longer than the one meeting.
Full copies of the committee's findings are available to the public at village hall.
