Garden City Mayor Wants Legislature To 'Reject' Casino Proposal

GARDEN CITY, NY — Opposition to the proposal to bring a casino to the Nassau Hub has reached the mayor's desk in Garden City.

In her weekly newsletter, Mayor Mary Carter Flanagan told residents three new members are opposed to the project being discussed between the County Planning Commission and Las Vegas Sands Corporation.

"We recognize the significant negative impact this project would have on quality of life within our Village and in the surrounding communities," Flanagan said.

Concerns she outlines include traffic congestion and security issues. The mayor also mentioned the grassroots organization "Say No to the Casino" which is working to educate residents about the proposal.

"It is our hope that the Nassau County Legislature will reject the Las Vegas Sands’ request," the mayor wrote.

Her hope is that the Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency will find "appropriate uses of properties which will enhance rather than negatively impact the surrounding communities," Flanagan said.
