Garden City Police Remind About Safety Measures As Schools Open
The first day of school is Sept. 5
GARDEN CITY, NY — It's almost time for students to return to school. The Garden City Police Department is taking the time to remind residents about how to stay safe.
The police have posted a four-part series focused on back to school.
Part One looks at "Safe Driving Issues," such as watching where children are dropped off or picked up at school and making sure children are careful opening car doors.

Among other topics include "School Bus Safety," where police say a parent or guardian should hold the child's hand and "walk together to the bus stop in the morning." They also say you should stay with your child until the bus arrives.
In exploring "Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety," police say, "Children should not walk while talking on a cell phone or texting."

Additionally, they encourage children to be defensive and not assume that a driver sees them.
Garden City police's final safety concern as school reopens is "Stranger Danger."
"Teach your children to trust their own instincts. They should trust that feeling in their gut that tells them if something is safe or not," police said.
"There is safety in numbers; whenever possible, do not walk alone."
The first day of school is Sept. 5.
