Garden City Resident Joins The Lustgarten Foundation and Cablevision's curePC Campaign in Recognition of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

Pancreatic Cancer Survivor Tom Whalen Honors His Daughter In curePC Courage Project Video Tribute

This November, Garden City resident Tom Whalen will participate in the curePC Courage Project, a video series of moving stories in tribute to those impacted by pancreatic cancer, created by The Lustgarten Foundation and Cablevision Systems Corporation to mark Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

curePC is the award-winning public awareness campaign created by Cablevision, a leading media and telecommunications company, and The Lustgarten Foundation, the nation’s largest nonprofit funder of pancreatic cancer research. The campaign raises awareness of the urgent fight against pancreatic cancer, America’s most lethal cancer. Due to the support of Cablevision, 100 percent of every dollar donated to The Lustgarten Foundation goes directly to pancreatic cancer research.

Both Tom and his daughter were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In January 2013, Tom was diagnosed with Stage 2b pancreatic cancer. Five months later, his 42-year-old daughter Jennifer, a mother of two, was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Tom is fortunate to be beating this disease, but Jennifer sadly passed away only six months after her diagnosis. During her battle and since her passing, Tom and his family participate in The Lustgarten Foundation’s walks to help call attention to the fight for a cure.

“My family has been devastated by pancreatic cancer, which is why we are determined to raise awareness about the disease’s grim statistics and the urgent need for more research,” Tom Whalen said. “Research is our best hope to save lives.”

“I am inspired by the many determined individuals like Tom who join with us in the fight against pancreatic cancer. By sharing his family’s story, Tom helps encourage others to learn more about the disease, and how to get involved in this important cause by spreading the word,” said Kerri Kaplan, executive director and COO, The Lustgarten Foundation. “With more research, we will find a cure.”
