Get More Veterans into Construction Jobs
Port wants to expand the Helmets to Hardhats program

West Hempstead, NY - Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Gary Port, who is running to represent the 19th District of the New York State Assembly, wants to expand the state’s Helmets to Hardhats program, in order to provide better jobs for veterans when they return home.
The Helmets to Hardhats program is a federally-funded program that connects active-duty military members and veterans to the building and construction industries. It allows direct entry for veterans into apprenticeships and training, and ensures economic stability and a successful transition back to civilian life. The program also promotes new development all across the state, and aids New York in modernizing and stabilizing its infrastructure. Port also believes that the state must include more veterans and veteran-owned construction firms in its Project Labor Agreements, which standardize contract terms for state projects.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has made it especially difficult for New Yorkers to find stable jobs, particularly veterans returning home. I have too many friends and former military colleagues all across the state who are struggling to support themselves and their families. The federal government has neglected them, so it’s high time the state steps up. As an Assemblymember, I’ll use my military and legal experience to advocate for veterans and draft legislation that will help them find work,” states Port.
