Helping Out Merchants During Parking Field Reno

Chamber donates signs at each entrance to better direct shoppers to local stores.

As renovations continue in Parking Field 7N, the Garden City Chamber of Commerce donated signs now situated at every entrance to better direct shoppers to the village merchants affected by the approximate eight-week improvements project.

"The chamber is trying to assist these merchants in any way we can," Althea Robinson, chamber executive director, said.

After several shopkeepers raised concerns about the lack of customer parking, the chamber requested the reconstruction be completed in three phases; with one-third of the lot closed at all times. The board agreed.

Reconstruction began the morning of Sept. 27; the third stage cost an additional $38,236 and added another one to two weeks of construction behind the Seventh Street and Franklin Avenue stores.

Mayor Robert Rothschild, in his weekly message to residents, has been encouraging customers to "continue to support these merchants and park outside of the construction areas ... or on Seventh Street."

Construction hours are between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Final paving is expected Wednesday, weather pending. Field stripping will follow.

"As the overall project is just about completed I want to thank all residents and shopkeepers for their support and understanding while this capital project was completed," Mayor Rothschild said.
