Homeowner Foils Burglar In Their Garage: Garden City Police

The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending July 17.
- Officers were able to gain access into a vehicle where a young child was accidentally locked inside on July 10.
- As part of its Drug Take Back Program, the department destroyed more than 220 pounds of collected unused, expired and unwanted medications on July 10.
- A truck traveling northbound struck the Cherry Valley Train overpass and was damaged on July 11. Another vehicle traveling southbound was damaged when debris from the truck fell on it. The driver of the truck, a 45-year-old man from Queens, was charged with disregarding bridge clearance signs. There were no reported injuries.
- A hood ornament was reportedly taken from a vehicle parked in Parking Field 2S on July 11.
- Officers and firefighters responded to the intersection of Rockaway Avenue and 1st Street for a report of two vehicles in a collision on July 11. Upon arrival, one car was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters put out the fire, preventing it from spreading beyond the vehicle. One driver suffered a neck injury and was transported to a local hospital; the other driver suffered a back injury and refused medical attention at the scene.
- A man was seen on a Ring Camera walking through a rear yard on Locust Street on July 12.
- As a result of strong winds, large tree limbs fell on St. James Street South and New Hyde Park Road on July 12.
- Firefighters rescued a person stuck in an elevator inside an Old Country Road office building on July 12. Firefighters rescued another person stuck in an elevator inside a Hilton Avenue apartment building the same day.
- Officers investigated a criminal mischief report at the Garden City Country Club where a golf cart was found submerged in a pond on the golf course on July 12.
- As a result of a safe pedestrian detail on 7th Street on July 12, four drivers were ticketed for failing to yield to pedestrians attempting to cross at the crosswalks.
- Credit cards were reported stolen from a locker inside the Healthtrax Fitness Center on July 13.
- Chase Bank reported a woman attempted to cash a fraudulent check in the amount of $2,200 on July 13. The woman left the scene when the bank refused to cash the check.
- A tire was reported stolen from a bicycle locked to a bike rack at Nassau Boulevard train station on July 14.
- Upon investigation of a domestic incident on July 15, a 69-year-old woman from Garden City was arrested for threatening to seriously injure another family member with a knife. The woman was charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.
- An employee of the cathedral reported damage to the lawn of the church on July 15. The damage appears to be from a vehicle driving on the lawn.
- Garden City officers assisted the NCPD with a suspicious suitcase left in front of their Headquarters on Franklin Avenue on July 15. NCPD Bomb Squad responded and determined it was not a threat.
- Credit cards were reported stolen from a car parked on Chelsea Road on July 16.
- A safe pedestrian detail was conducted on 7th Street on July 16: two drivers were ticketed for failing to yield to pedestrians attempting to cross at the crosswalks and one car was ticketed for parking in a crosswalk.
- As a result of a minor auto accident investigation in Parking Field 7N on July 16, a 20-year-old woman from Queens was charged with driving with four driver license suspensions.
- Officers investigated a burglary from the attached garage of a home on Mulberry Street on July 17. A man opened the garage door using a remote stolen from a car parked in the driveway. The homeowner heard the door rising, looked out the window and yelled at the man. The man dropped the remote and fled the scene on foot. At this time, there appears to be no property loss. The investigation is ongoing.
