Islanders Return Will Boost Local Economy: Receiver Of Taxes
The 12 games per year could bring in nearly $20 million annually, plus the boons to local businesses.

Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin has crunched the numbers, and he says that the Islanders' plan to return to Nassau Coliseum for 60 games over the next three seasons will be a big boost to the local economy, bringing in tens of millions of dollars to the area.
Clavin noted that the on-site economic impact that he has included in his estimate focuses on parking and ticket sales, as well as food, other concession items and souvenirs. He has not estimated off-site impacts to the economy such as hotel room rentals, local restaurants, rental cars, taxi and bus usage, among a host of others.
“This is great news for Islanders’ fans, and great news for the local economy,” Clavin said. “Our fans will be enjoying a great Long Island team while supporting our local economy.”

Clavin projected ticket sales revenue at $12.5 million based on an average ticket price of $80 and an attendance rate of 13,000 fans per game. Ticket sales would generate an additional $1.1 million in sales tax. And if 6,500 cars parked during games with a parking fee of $15 per car, parking revenue for the 12-game season would total $1.27 million. Clavin estimated that souvenir, concession, food and other on-site purchases at about $3.4 million in revenue.
In total, Clavin estimated prospective on-site revenues from the 12 regular season games that the Islanders will play in Uniondale to amount to approximately $18.3 million, including sales tax. Clavin also said that the economic impact could soar if post-season games are played at the Coliseum.

“The pride and enjoyment of having the Islanders back home is priceless,” said Clavin. “The economic impact at the Coliseum alone could be around $20 million, and that doesn’t include post-season playoff revenue. What’s more, the positive eaffect on the Marriott Hotel, Borelli’s Restaurant and other area businesses will be significant. In the words of Islanders’ fans, ‘Yes, Yes, Yes.’”
