GARDEN CITY, NY — September 18, 2014 — Jaspan Schlesinger LLP is pleased to announce that the Hon. Jeffrey D. Lebowitz, who recently retired as a Court of Claims judge and Acting Supreme Court Justice in Queens County has joined the firm as Special Counsel.

A resident of Forest Hills, New York, Judge Lebowitz, will focus his practice on matrimonial and family legal matters as well as general litigation.

Judge Lebowitz was first appointed to the New York City Civil Court in 1993 by then New York City Mayor David Dinkins. In 1999, Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman appointed him to serve as an Acting Supreme Court Justice where he presided over both civil and criminal cases. In 2009, Governor David Paterson appointed Judge Lebowitz to the New York State Court of Claims during which he continued to serve as an Acting Supreme Court Justice in Queens County.

During his tenure on the bench, Judge Lebowitz presided for six years in the Matrimonial Part of the Queens County Supreme Court. He was also assigned to the first mixed Criminal/Civil hybrid Court in the New York Metropolitan area. For the last two and a half years, he presided over the trial of complex tort litigation including medical malpractice cases.

Judge Lebowitz has written extensively in the area of family law and has lectured on a variety of legal issues before the Association of Collaborative Family Law Practitioners, the Law Department of the City of New York and the Queens County District Attorney’s Office.

Judge Lebowitz served as President of the Statewide Designated Justice’s Association. He has also served as Chair of the Brandeis Association, the bar association of Jewish legal professionals in Queens County, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of his Temple.

Judge Lebowitz received his B.A. degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton and his J.D. degree from Hofstra University School of Law.
