  • Pre-sale, plan with neighbors to generate more traffic and awareness. Post signs off the nearest main street (make sure you are in compliance with local laws).
  • If possible, move everything out of the garage that's not for sale or hang a blanket, tarp, or other covering over those items so customers stay focused on what is for sale.
  • Clean your goods. Spray clean small appliances and knickknacks, wash dishes and clothes, and hang the clothes using racks, ropes, or chains. Plastic food storage bags can hold children's game pieces or puzzle parts as well as jewelry or other small items. Display books spine side up in shallow boxes.
  • Keep everything at easy access such as clothes on racks or a clothesline, and other goods on tables. People are less likely to bend over to check things out if they on the ground.
  • Put like items together, separating tools from toys from dishes. Further separate as needed, such as toy action figures from puzzles pieces, earrings from bracelets, etc. Make it as easy as possible for your customers to browse your sale so they will be more inclined to buy.
  • Placing like items together also reduces your time placing individual price stickers. It's simpler to have all paperback books or all children's clothing one price, for example. But do make pricing clear. Buyers don't want to have to ask you what everything costs and may decide to leave rather than bother with questions.
  • Offer packages, or bundle things together such as a lamp, chair, and table. Especially with parents looking to outfit students' college housing, they may be likely to take the entire vignette off your hands, rather than piece by piece.
  • Price realistically. Shoppers are looking for bargains and your objective is to get rid of your unwanted stuff.
  • If you are altruistic and donating some or all of the proceeds to a charity, put a sign out promoting that. People will be less likely to haggle over prices and may be more motivated to buy.
  • Have enough small change and dollar bills to last throughout the time of the sale.
  • Have fun with it. It's a chance to meet friends and neighbors and do something out of the ordinary.
