Mail Thief Was Driving With 48 License Suspensions: GCPD

The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Jan. 28.

  • Officers and firefighters responded to Old Country Road for a report of low hanging power wires on Jan. 22. Upon investigation, it was determined the wires were phone lines. Verizon was notified to respond and corrected the condition.
  • Officers investigated a report of a truck leaving the scene after striking and damaging a vehicle parked on Dartmouth Street on Jan. 22. On Jan. 26, Garden City detectives arrested a 32-year-old man from Mineola for this incident.
  • Officers investigated three reports of checks being intercepted in the mail, altered to higher amounts and rewritten to other parties on Jan. 23.
  • As a result of a domestic incident investigation on Jan. 23, officers arrested a 23-year-old man from Garden City for assaulting another family member at their residence.
  • As a result of a vehicle stop on Old Country Road on Jan. 23, a 25-year-old man from Uniondale was arrested for driving with five license suspensions, a Hempstead traffic warrant, excessive speed and two unsafe lane usage violations.
  • A 39-year-old man from Queens was charged with driving on Washington Avenue while having three license suspensions and excessive speed on Jan. 23.
  • A vehicle, deemed a scofflaw by the Garden City Court due to unpaid parking tickets, was impounded in Parking Field 9E on Jan. 23.
  • As a result of an investigation of a vehicle passing a stop sign on Pine Street on Jan. 24, officers arrested a 26-year-old man from Queens for criminal possession of a controlled substance (THC), criminal possession of marijuana, driving with a suspended license and passing a stop sign.
  • As a result of a traffic stop investigation on Seventh Street on Jan. 24, officers arrested a 37-year-old man from Elmont for driving without a court ordered interlock device, suspended license, unregistered vehicle and uninspected vehicle.
  • On Jan. 24, a 37-year-old man was charged with driving on Meadow Street with five driver license suspensions, unregistered vehicle and uninspected vehicle.
  • On Jan. 24, a 24-year-old woman was charged with driving on Clinton Road with a suspended registration and excessive speed.
  • Based on an officer’s observations, two subjects were arrested for possession of stolen mail from a Stratford Avenue mailbox and possession of a device designed to remove mail from mailboxes on Jan. 25. The first subject, a 29-year-old woman from Brooklyn, was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, possession of burglar tools, excessive speed and unsafe lane usage. The second subject, a 24-year-old man from the Bronx, was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, aggravated unlicensed operation first degree (48 license suspensions), possession of burglar tools and two outstanding warrants.
  • Loose change was reported stolen from a vehicle parked on Willow Street on Jan. 26.
  • Officers arrested a 60-year-old man from Franklin Square on Stewart Avenue on Jan. 26 for DWI, passing a red light and unsafe lane usage.
  • A 29-year-old woman was charged with driving on Meadow Street with a suspended vehicle registration, uninsured vehicle and passing a stop sign on Jan. 26.
  • On Jan. 27, a resident reported receiving a call from a person who stated she owed PSEG $1,000 and instructed her to purchase Green Pak money cards for payment to avoid losing service. The victim purchased the cards, called the person back and read off the numbers. It was later determined this was a scam. Another resident reported a similar scam on Jan. 28.
  • Officers are investigating a report of congregants of a church receiving emails on Jan. 28 from someone claiming to be their pastor asking them to obtain gift cards to help pay for a sick person. It was determined the email does not belong to the pastor and is a scam.
  • An officer stopped a commercial vehicle on Franklin Avenue on Jan. 28 for defective lighting and, upon investigation, charged the 23-year-old driver with driving with three license suspensions.
  • Two drivers were cited for illegal U-turns on Seventh Street on Jan. 28.
