Mailbox Fishers Arrested By Village Police: Garden City PD

The Garden City Police Department reported the following incident for the week ending Jan. 7.

  • A man was seen on a surveillance system trying door handles to a vehicle parked on Whitehall Boulevard on Dec. 31. There was no reported entry.
  • As a result of a traffic stop on Jan. 1 on Nassau Boulevard for speeding, officers arrested a 29-year-old from New Hyde Park for DWI, driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
  • As a result of two traffic stop investigations on Clinton Road on Jan. 1, a 43-year-old man from Mineola was arrested for DWI, driving with a suspended license and unsafe lane usage; and a 48-year-old man from Central Islip was arrested for DWI and uninspected vehicle.
  • As a result of a traffic stop for a speeding auto on Cathedral Avenue on Jan. 1, a 22-year-old man was charged with driving with a suspended license and excessive speed.
  • An unknown vehicle struck a parked vehicle on 1st Street and left the scene without stopping on Jan. 1.
  • On Jan. 2, Garden City detectives arrested a 23-year-old man from the Bronx and a 23-year-old man from West Hempstead for a Dec. 22 incident where they used a device with a sticky substance to remove numerous envelopes, many of them containing checks, from a mailbox on Meadbrook Road. Both men were charged with possession of stolen property, possession of burglar tools and larceny.
  • Officers responded to Parking Field 9W for a report of a suspicious backpack left in the parking lot on Jan. 2. Upon investigation, it was determined the backpack contained a musical instrument which was eventually returned to its owner.
  • Someone entered a vehicle on Brixton Road and went through the contents of the glove compartment on Jan. 2. No loss reported at this time.
  • Officers investigated a report of a possible stolen laptop from a Kensington Road home on Jan. 2. FedEx states their records show the item was delivered and signed for on a prior date. GCPD and FedEx are investigating the incident.
  • Officers responded to John Street for a report of a suspicious person on Jan. 4. Upon investigation, it was determined the man entered a rear yard and entered a shed with the intent to steal a bike. Officers located the man, a 20-year-old from Queens, and placed him under arrest for criminal trespass and attempted larceny.
  • A 27-year-old man was charged with driving on 9th Street with a suspended license and uninspected vehicle on Jan. 4.
  • A 28-year-old woman was charged with driving on Franklin Avenue at 3rd Street with a suspended license, as well as excessive speed and uninsured operation, on Jan. 5.
  • Officers responded to CVS on Jan. 6 for a report of a man fleeing the store after stealing multiple personal care items. While searching the area, officers located and apprehended the man on Franklin Avenue and 15th Street. He was charged with petty larceny.
  • A package placed by the door of a Stewart Avenue apartment was reported stolen on Jan. 6.
  • A 27-year-old man was charged with driving on Stewart Avenue with two driver license suspensions and inadequate headlights on Jan. 6.
  • A truck inspection was conducted on Clinton Road and Commercial Avenue on Jan. 6. Twelve trucks were inspected, of which five were placed out of service. Police issued 42 tickets for various traffic and safety violations, including an overweight violation and an unsecured load violation.
  • A surveillance system recorded a man trying door handles to a vehicle parked on Wydler Court on Jan. 7. There was no reported entry.
  • An 18-year-old Garden City man was charged with hosting a party involving alcohol and minors at a relative’s house on Jan. 7.
  • On Jan. 7, an elderly resident reported she received a phone call from a man who identified himself as an attorney. The caller stated her granddaughter was arrested and needed $9,600 for bail. As the woman was preparing to obtain the money, she determined the incident was a scam and her granddaughter was safe.
  • A 34-year-old man was charged with driving on Cathedral Avenue with three driver license suspensions, improper plates and uninsured operation on Jan. 7.
