Nassau Man Killed Over $22 Of Gas: Police

Police have identified the victim of this morning's hit and run as a gas station attendant trying to stop someone from stealing gas.

UPDATE, 4:50 P.M.: Nassau police say that the man who was killed in a hit-and-run Monday morning died over $22 of gas.

Police identified the man as Cemal Dagdeviren, 59, of Levittown, a manager at the Pit Stop Gas Station in South Hempstead.

According to police, and unknown man pulled into the gas station just before 7:20 p.m. and asked the attendant to fill up his car. The employees became suspicious because his car had no license plates or registration sticker. They stopped filling his car after putting $22 worth of gas into it and asked him to pull aside.

The man told the manager that he would pay with a credit card, which police say was a fake. The manager told him to pay with cash, but the man said he didn't have any, despite showing a $50 bill to the attendant earlier.

The man then tried to leave the station and the manager tried to stop him. He got in front of the man's car, and the man ran him over on purpose, police say.
