Man Punched Elderly Family Member In Face: Garden City Police

GARDEN CITY, NY — The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending April 8.
- A truck inspection was conducted on Clinton Road on April 1 with assistance from the state Department of Transportation. In total, 11 vehicles were inspected, of which five were placed out of service. Forty-eight tickets were issued for various safety and traffic violations including 22 overweight violations and an unsecured load violation.
- Officers assisted the fire department, which responded to a brush fire at the Garden City Golf Club, a brush fire on Stewart Avenue at Wellington Road, and a residential carbon monoxide alarm activation due to excessive smoke coming from a barbecue on April 1.
- Upon investigation, Garden City detectives arrested a 29-year-old man from Elmont on Jefferson Street for possession of marijuana and two vehicle and traffic law violations on April 1.
- Officers responded to six COVID-19 related incidents (includes three medical aided reports) on April 1.
- An Adelphi student reported receiving a phone call from an unknown man on April 2 who said that she won a government education grant for $9,000 and advised her to purchase four eBay $50 gift cards to activate her grant account. The student complied, however, she later determined it was a scam.
- Officers responded to four COVID-19 related incidents on April 2.
- Officers and firefighters responded to Stewart Avenue on April 2 where, as a result of strong winds, a large transformer fell onto the roadway, blocking three lanes of traffic and causing local power outages. The area was safeguarded until the condition was corrected by PSEG.
- Officers responded to a family dispute at a Garden City home on April 3 where a 23-year-ol dman punched a family member, who was over 65 years old, in the eye, causing swelling and blurred vision. The man was placed under arrest and during transport to police headquarters he stated he worked with people suffering from COVID-19 and proceeded to spit at two officers, hitting one in the face and neck area. He was charged with second-degree assault, menacing, third-degree assault and harassment.
- Officers responded to three COVID-19 related incidents (all medical aided reports) on April 3.
- Officers responded to six COVID-19 related calls (includes 3 medical aided reports) on April 4.
- Officers assisted firefighters who responded to two commercial fire alarms and a residential carbon monoxide alarm on April 5. Upon investigation, the fire department determined all was in order at all three locations.
- Officers responded to six COVID-19 related incidents (includes 4 medical aided reports) on April 5.
- Officers assisted the fire department with a residential basement fire on Clinton Road on April 6. The fire was apparently caused by an overheated battery. A co-investigation is being conducted by the fire department and the Nassau County Fire Marshall's Office.
- Officers responded to five COVID-19 related incidents (includes two medical aided reports) on April 6.
- A police sergeant responded to a home and extinguished a grill fire on April 7.
- Firefighters and officers responded to a home for a smoke condition caused by burnt food on April 7.
