Man Said He Was Mugged After Injuring Himself During Break-In: PD

The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Aug. 6.

  • A resident reported an unauthorized virtual credit card was opened in her name and used to make a $950 purchase on July 31.
  • A student at Adelphi University reported another vehicle struck and damaged her car before leaving the scene without stopping on July 31.
  • A safe pedestrian detail was conducted on 7th Street on Aug. 1. Three drivers were issued tickets for failing to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
  • The police department is investigating four fraudulent transactions, totaling $1,000, at the Nassau County Credit Union on Aug. 1.
  • Officers responded to a Wetherill Road residence on Aug. 1 for downed power lines in the rear yard.
  • Officers investigated a report of a vehicle leaving the scene after striking and damaging another vehicle on Franklin Avenue on Aug. 1.
  • A Commercial Avenue business reported a fraudulent check for $7,100 was written against the company’s bank account on Aug. 2.
  • The Marine base reported the loss of several parking permits on Aug. 2.
  • Several items were found missing from a detached garage on Hilton Avenue on Aug. 2. The items were last seen on July 30.
  • Someone knocked over two Porta Potties on St. Paul’s Field on Aug. 3.
  • On Aug. 4, officers responded to a report of a subject attempting to flee Walgreens after stealing numerous medications from the store. Upon arrival, officers apprehended the subject, a 19-year-old man from Elmont. He was charged with larceny and resisting arrest.
  • Officers investigated a criminal mischief report on Aug. 5 after the water fountain on the corner of Franklin Avenue was found damaged.
  • On August 4, Garden City firefighters responded to the old Sears building on Franklin Avenue for a general fire alarm. Upon arrival, they determined that several fire extinguishers were discharged inside the building, apparently activating the alarm. Officers responded to the scene and upon investigation, determined someone entered the building by forcing open a basement door and, while inside, sprayed graffiti, discharged several fire extinguishers and damaged several light fixtures, glass panels and a vehicle parked in a loading dock. On Aug. 5, at approximately 8 p.m., a Garden City detective was on patrol in Parking Field 9E when he saw a suspicious vehicle. Police say the two occupants, an 18-year-old man and a 20-year-old man, both from Stewart Manor, were responsible for the Aug. 4 incident. Both men were placed under arrest and charged with burglary and criminal mischief. On Aug. 6, Garden City detectives arrested a third person, a an 18-year-old man from Floral Park. He was also charged him with burglary and criminal mischief.
  • As a result of a traffic stop investigation on Clinton Road on Aug. 5, a 47-year-old woman from Queens was charged driving with a suspended license, driving with a suspended registration and excessive speed.
  • Officers responded to Cathedral Avenue and Sixth Street on Aug. 6 for a report of a man with a severe cut to his hand. Upon arrival of the officers, the male said that another man approached him, demanded money and then cut him with a knife. The injured mam was transported to Winthrop Hospital where he gave a statement describing the alleged robbery. During investigation of the crime scene, officers followed the trail of blood from the injured man to a broken window at the Cathedral House. Upon further investigation, it was determined the man was not a victim of a robbery but cut his hand while attempting to break into the building. The 45-year-old man, who says he is homeless, was charged with attempted burglary and providing a false written statement.
  • A wallet was reported stolen from a vehicle parked on Pine Street.
