Man Stole Checks From Nassau Mailboxes And Cashed Them: Police

Police say he altered the checks for higher amounts, and then used a fake ID to cash them.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — A Brooklyn man was arrested over the weekend and charged with stealing checks from mailboxes and chasing them for higher amounts.

According to police, on July 5 and Oct. 16, 2019, King Hooper, 22, of Newkirk Avenue, stole checks from mailboxes in Nassau County. He then altered the checks to higher amounts and used a fake identity to cash them, police said.

Police say they identified Hooper and placed him under arrest on Saturday.

Hooper is charged with two counts of third-degree grand larceny, two counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, four counts of first-degree identity theft, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and two counts of first-degree scheme to defraud. He was arraigned on Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead.
