Man Struck, Killed By Train In Garden City: Police

The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Jan. 14.
- On Jan. 8, officers began investigating an unauthorized transfer of $32,000 from a resident’s bank account.
- As a result of a traffic stop investigation on Jan. 8, officers arrested a 46-year-old man from Rockville Centre for driving on Clinton Road at Poplar Street with six license suspensions, possession of marijuana, and an equipment violation.
- On Jan. 9, the department began investigating multiple reports of checks placed in the mail at various Garden City locations being intercepted, altered and rewritten for higher monetary amounts to other people.
- As a result of a joint investigation with the Nassau County Probation Department on Supreme Court Drive on Jan. 9, Garden City officers arrested a 34-year-old woman from Port Washington for driving without a court ordered interlock system as well as driving with a suspended license.
- Officers arrested a 22-year-old man from Oyster Bay on Franklin Avenue and 6th Street on Jan. 10 for driving while impaired, driving with a suspended license and passing a red traffic signal.
- After investigation of an incident that occurred at a Brompton Road residence in December, Garden City detectives arrested a 38-year-old man from Queens on Jan. 10 for attempted burglary, burglary and trespassing.
- A contractor reported the theft of two flooring machines valued at $9,000 from a Wetherill Road Worksite on Jan. 10.
- A man was seen on a surveillance system walking on a Locust Street property checking car door handles on Jan. 10.
- On Jan. 11, after checking a vehicle for parking on 2nd Street in violation of village-wide no parking regulations, officers saw the vehicle running with multiple occupants, one of them, drinking an alcoholic beverage. Upon investigation, the driver, a 28-year-old man from Mineola, was arrested for DWI and open alcoholic container inside a vehicle.
- As a result of a traffic stop investigation on 1st Street and Rockaway Avenue on Jan. 11, Garden City officers arrested a 25-year-old man from Franklin Square for driving without a court ordered interlock system, driving with a suspended license and uninspected vehicle.
- Garden City officers assisted the Nassau County Police Department with traffic and security details for a march against anti-Semitism from County Seat Drive and 11th Street to Franklin Avenue on Jan. 12. There were approximately 2,500 participants in the event.
- Police officers and firefighters responded to a Wetherill Road residence on Jan. 12, where a family member accidentally drove her vehicle into the house. The house and vehicle were damaged. There were no reported injuries. The building department arrived at the scene for a house inspection.
- Police officers and firefighters responded to the train tracks west of the Merillon Avenue Train Station where a male was struck by a train on Jan. 12. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
- Upon investigation of a vehicle striking a curb on Stewart Avenue which resulted in two damaged tires on Jan. 12, officers arrested a 37-year-old man from Queens for DWI.
- A truck traveling south on Cherry Valley Avenue struck the train overpass on Jan. 13. The truck suffered damage and the driver was not injured. The driver, a 44-year-old man from Copiague, was charged with disobeying bridge clearance signs.
- As a result of a traffic stop investigation on Clinton Road and St James Street South on Jan. 13, a 28-year-old man from Valley Stream was charged with driving with two license suspensions, suspended registration and two equipment violations.
- Loose change was reported stolen from a vehicle parked in a Spruce Street driveway on Jan. 14.
- During a commercial vehicle inspection checkpoint on New Hyde Park Road on Jan. 14, officers inspected 14 trucks and placed four out of service. There were 44 tickets issued for various safety and traffic violations, including four overweight violations and an unsecured load violation.
- Officers and Garden City firefighters assisted the NCPD with safeguarding Cherry Valley Avenue in the vicinity of the Village Yard due to a nearby gas line break in West Hempstead on Jan. 14.
