Mayor Watras to Declare Darwin Day in Garden City

Darwin Day celebrates science and humanism in a free, family-friendly event at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island on Sun., Feb. 8.

The Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, located at 38 Old Country Road, is celebrating its 7th Annual Darwin Day on Sunday, Feb. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We begin the morning with the Proclamation that February 12, Darwin’s birthday, will be Darwin Day in Garden City. Why celebrate Darwin Day? Darwin’s theory of evolution is the unifying theory of biology. Our community’s commitment to science is evidenced by the outstanding science programs at Garden City High School and Adelphi University. The Ethical Humanist Society joins with the American Humanist Association in recognizing the role of science in the betterment of humankind and our ethical responsibility to use it for human flourishing, while taking care of the earth for future generations.

Our first hour includes music, poetry, and a lecture presentation by Dr. John Teehan, Hofstra University, entitled “A Darwinian Approach to Religion: Humanistic Implications.” Babysitting will be provided. During lunch (for sale), we will be entertained by fiddle and guitar music by Michelle Fury and Liz Taub. Then our celebration of humanism and science continues with science games and demonstrations, social action opportunities, raffles, and activities for children. We will be honoring Jon Stepanian of Long Island Food Not Bombs for his exemplary work in providing vegan groceries for people in need around Long Island. Jon truly demonstrates our motto, “Deed Before Creed.”

The Ethical Humanist Society’s Darwin Day, Sunday, Feb. 8, 11 to 2 is free and open to the public. We invite you to bring a vegan food item (canned or fresh fruit or vegetables, bread, rice, etc.) to donate to Food Not Bombs. We hope you will join us for an informative and fun day. Learn, connect, be inspired... and create a caring world. For more information about the Ethical Humanist Society, go to http://www.ehsli.org.
