Motown Presentation in Celebration of Black History Month

Uniondale Holds Motown Presentation in Celebration of Black History Month

The Uniondale Union Free School District’s Northern Parkway Elementary School recently welcomed parents and community members to enjoy an original and historical presentation of Motown Revue. The program, created to celebrate Black History Month, entertained and brought historical context to how Motown influenced social justice in America. Students of all grades preformed songs and danced, as well as various skits to represent the influential record label.

In addition to the performance itself, throughout the week leading up to the event, students created artistic representations of reputable artists who were once signed to the Motown label. Displays highlighting such artists as the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder and many more were immortalized on the walls of Northern Parkway to commemorate their influence on social change.

Motown, a record label founded in the 1950’s, was vital in the creation of its own influential sound, which combined soul music and pop and its efforts to bring attention to social injustice rampant throughout the United States. The Motown program and other Black History Month celebrations are a large part of the District’s ongoing initiative to expose students to diverse cultures and promote artistic expression among its students.
