Multiple Checks Stolen From Garden City Mailboxes: Police

The Garden City Police Department reported the following incidents for the week ending Feb. 19.

  • Garden City detectives arrested a 19-year-old man from the Bronx for the theft of a check from a Garden City mailbox on Feb. 12. The check was altered and cashed for a higher amount. He was charged with grand larceny.
  • Officers investigated an identity theft report on Feb. 12 where someone attempted to use the credit card information of a resident to make online purchases totaling $4,000.
  • Miscellaneous items were reported stolen from vehicles parked in two different driveways on Kenwood Road on Feb. 13.
  • A 42-year-old driver was charged with obstructing the intersection of Cathedral Avenue and 4th Street, as well as driving with four license suspensions, on Feb. 13.
  • A raincoat was reported stolen from a coat rack inside the NY Sports Club on Feb. 13.
  • A witness observed a person rummaging through a vehicle on 3rd Street on Feb. 14. The person was described as a black man, 5 feet, 7 inches tall in his mid 20’s, with facial hair, wearing a blue baseball hat, dark pants and a blue Islanders sweatshirt.
  • Garden City Detectives arrested a 44-year-old woman from Freeport on Feb. 14 for assaulting a woman on Cathedral Avenue on Feb. 13th. The woman pulled an earring from the victim's ear causing a tear in the earlobe.
  • A 28-year-old man from Pennsylvania was arrested on Feb. 14 for leaving the scene of an accident that occurred at Adelphi University on Feb. 12.
  • A vehicle parked in a Franklin Avenue garage was found damaged by unknown means on Feb. 14.
  • A 34-year-old man was charged with driving on Clinton Road with a suspended license, revoked registration, uninsured operation and excessive speed on Feb. 16.
  • Upon investigation of a suspicious subject on Feb. 17, officers located and arrested a 25-year-old man from New Cassel for the theft of property from a car parked on Wyatt Road. Officers also determined the man was driving a vehicle reported stolen in New Cassel on Feb. 15. The man was charged with criminal possession of stolen property and petty larceny.
  • A van was reported stolen from a Washington Avenue driveway on Feb. 17. The vehicle was later recovered on Huntington Road.
  • Items were reported stolen from vehicles on Commander Avenue, Garden Street and St. James Street South on Feb. 17.
  • As a result of a traffic stop of a speeding auto on Clinton Road on Feb. 17, officers arrested a 22-year-old man for driving with six license suspensions including one for a prior DWI, uninsured operation and excessive speed.
  • A 24-year-old man was charged with driving on Nassau Boulevard with a suspended license and excessive speed on Feb. 17.
  • Officers investigated an identity theft on Feb. 18 where someone was able to redeem sky mile points from a resident’s credit card account to book multiple flights.
  • Officers were able to unlock a vehicle where a child was accidentally locked inside on Feb. 18.
  • Multiple checks, reported stolen from area mailboxes, were bleached, altered and cashed for higher amounts by unknown people between Feb. 12 and 18. To assist in preventing mail theft, residents are encouraged to give their mail directly to their mail carrier or place them in mail receptacles inside a post office in lieu of placing them in street mailboxes.
