Officer On Patrol Finds Stolen Car In Lot: Garden City Police

Upon investigating a report of suspicious activity in Parking Field 9E on Oct. 31, officers arrested a 29-year-old man from the Bronx for three counts of possession of forged instruments (two credit cards and a Connecticut driver’s license), 11 driver license suspensions, suspended registration and uninsured operation.

Officers investigated a report of a man in a beige four-door sedan approaching an 8-year-old boy walking up the driveway of his Avalon Road home after getting off a school bus on Oct. 31. The vehicle stopped and the driver asked the child if he wanted candy. The vehicle then left the area. Garden City detectives request anyone with further information call them at 465-4108.

Officers investigated a report of a vehicle traveling south on Adams Street and fleeing the scene after striking and damaging a tree on Oct. 31.

On Nov. 1, an elderly resident stated she received a phone call from an unknown man who said he was from Con-Ed and informed the woman she owed $200 for unpaid bills. Per instructions from the caller, the victim purchased a MoneyPak gift card, called the phone number back and provided the card’s serial numbers. It was later determined to be a scam.

At approximately 1 p.m. on Nov. 3, an officer patrolling Parking Field 2S saw a suspicious vehicle with heavy damage. The vehicle appeared to just have been in an accident. The three occupants in the vehicle appeared to be smoking marijuana. As the officer approached the vehicle, the three subjects exited the vehicle and fled the scene. One subject, a 13-year-old from Hempstead, was apprehended. A check on the vehicle indicated it was stolen in East Garden City on Nov. 1. The teen was charged with criminal possession of stolen property.

Officers assisted the Garden City Fire Department for a report of a smoke condition inside the Sears parking garage on Nov. 3. It was determined the condition was caused by a faulty light fixture.

As a result of strong winds on Nov. 3, officers responded to calls for tree limbs down on Wyatt Road and Clinton Road.

Officers responded to Chestnut Street on Nov. 3, where a rental truck traveling west struck the train trestle. Upon inspection, the bridge was not damaged; the box portion of the truck was damaged. The driver, a 66-year-old man from Albertson, was cited for disregarding bridge clearance signs. There were no reported injuries.

An officer patrolling Hilton Avenue on Nov. 4 saw two men walking, each carrying new comforter sets. The officer recognized one of the men as the suspect of a prior theft case at Sears. Upon further investigation, it was determined that both men had just stolen the comforter sets from Sears. One, a 19-year-old man from Hempstead, was arrested for petty larceny in this case as well as two additional counts of petty larceny for two prior theft cases in Sears on Nov. 2 and Oct. 27. The other man, a 59-year-old from Hempstead, was charged with one count of petty larceny.

At 9:45 p.m. on Nov. 4, officers responded to a Cathedral Avenue home where the homeowner saw a man in the rear fenced-in-yard peering into the home. The man fled the scene. A search was conducted and the man was located and apprehended on Cathedral Avenue in Hempstead. The 45-year-old man from Hempstead was arrested and charged with criminal trespass and possession of a controlled substance (PCP).

Garden City detectives arrested a 75-year-old man from Merrick on Nov. 5 for using a resident’s checking account information, without authorization, to pay for two cell phone bills totaling $680. The man had previously done plumbing work for the victim. He was charged with petty larceny, identity theft and unlawful possession of personal identification.

A resident reported $1,900 in unauthorized charges against her credit card account on Nov. 6.
